Onam is one of the biggest festivals of Kerala. The 10-day long festival is celebrated during the harvest months and marks the homecoming of the King Mahabali. Elaborate meals are prepared for the feast during Onam which is called Onam Sadhya. The Sadhya comprises of 60 dishes, one of which is Mathan Erissery. This delicious dish is made with grated coconut, red kidney beans, and pumpkin, tempered with a beautiful blend of mustard seeds and crisp curry leaves. Ingredients

  • 100 gm red kidney beans
  • 200 gm pumpkin
  • 2 chopped onion
  • 6 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 dry red chili
  • 2 green chilli
  • salt as required
  • 3 cup water
  • 5 tablespoon grated coconut
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder

Step

  1. Step 1:

    Soak the red kidney beans overnight before cooking them. Now, take a pressure cooker and add the red beans in it along with salt, turmeric, water, and red chilli powder. Pressure cook for 5-6 whistles.

  2. Step 2:

    Meanwhile, chop the pumpkin and add them to the cooker and cook it on medium flame without covering it with the lid. Transfer cooked pumpkin to a large pan. Place it over medium-high heat. Add grated coconut to pumpkin. Stir well.

  3. Step 3:

    Next, chop the onions and green chillies in a bowl. Blend the onions, green chillies, and cumin seeds and blend it well. Add a little water if the mixture is too thick.

  4. Step 4:

    Add this coconut paste to the pressure cooker and stir well.

  5. Step 5:

    Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli along with grated coconut. Fry the mixture till golden brown.

  6. Step 6:

    Now, add this tempering along with salt to the pumpkin and mix well. Cook uncovered and stir occasionally.

  7. Step 7:

    Serve hot Erissery with rice.
