Clearing speculations, the English songwriter and singer Dua Lipa has confirmed that she will not be performing at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup. It is set to take place in Qatar from November 20, 2022.

Taking to social media, the singer shared a definitive statement refuting the rumours regarding her involvement in the World Cup while also urging the host nation to address the human rights concerns in the country. “There is currently a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the world cup in Qatar. I will not be performing and nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to perform.”

Further, she wrote, “I will be cheering England on from afar and I look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup. One love Dua x.”

Since its announcement, FIFA has been under scrutiny for their controversial decision to host this year’s World Cup in Qatar after its struggle with several deaths of migrant workers during the construction of stadiums in the country. Besides poor labour laws, other human rights concerns involve homosexuality deemed illegal in the country.

“[The tournament] is the thing you work for your whole life and you don’t want that to be diminished by everything else that is going on around it currently. But we recognize we are going to be in that situation, we’ve got to accept and deal with it,” England manager Gareth Southgate said in a press conference earlier this week.
