Nora Fatehi, the Bollywood actor and dancer, has been denied to perform in Bangladesh by the orders of the government citing reasons to save dollars as a part of austerity measures- strict economic policies that the government implement to save spending and public debt.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs issued a notice on Monday, October 17, 2022, cancelling Fatehi’s permission to visit the country for an event organised by the Women Leadership Corporation at the Bangabandhu International Convention Hall today, October 18. The actor was scheduled to dance and distribute awards at the Women Entrepreneur Awards ceremony. The decision came after the application of the organizer of the event, Israt Jahan Maria, on behalf of Women Leadership Corporation. The notice further mentioned that Fatehi was not allowed to perform in another event the previous month as well due to the same reason.

Denying the permission, the Ministry said that it was not granted “in view of the global situation and with the aim of maintaining the foreign exchange reserves.” Further, the Ministry referred to the central bank’s restrictions on dollar payments amidst the shrinking foreign exchange reserves. They cited that it has reduced from $46.13 billion a year earlier to $36.33 billion as of October 12 which was reportedly enough to cover roughly four months of imports.

As per Anne-Marie Gulde-Wolf, deputy director of the Asia and Pacific Department at the IMF, the International Monetary Fund is set to send its first negotiation mission to Bangladesh later this October to begin discussions with the government on loans the country has sought. She further said at the media briefing that the reserves “are still at a comfortable level, but the direction has been going down” and that the Fund has been discussing an economic program that will “contain measures to stabilize the economy and to avoid a further downturn in the economy.”
