Turnips are the most preferred vegetable during winter. Whether you eat it as a salad or make it a curry, it tastes amazing. But if you want to try something new then you can make bharta out of it which can be devoured with chapati or paratha. Check out the easy shalgam ka bharta recipe here.
Shalgam Ka Bharta Recipe
Shalgam tastes amazing but it tastes divine when made in the form of bharta. The blend of spices makes it a lip-smacking dish. Moreover, turnips have health benefits as well. However, it is mostly made in winter. So, if you haven’t tried making shalgam ka bharta yet, follow the recipe given below.
Step 1: Thoroughly wash, peel and dry the turnip in a strainer.
Step 2: Remove the upper part of the turnip cut it into small pieces and keep it in a bowl.
Step 3: Meanwhile, make a paste of tomato and green chilli.
Step 4: Take a pressure cooker and put it on a medium flame.
Step 5: Add oil and let it heat. Now add cumin, asafetida, ginger paste, turmeric powder and coriander powder.
Step 6: Saute the spices until they are brown.
Step 7: Now add chopped turnip, red chilli powder and salt.
Step 8: Saute the turnip with the spices for one minute and then add ¼ cup of water to it.
Step 9: Put the lid on the cooker, increase the flame and let it cook until one whistle.
Step 10: Reduce the flame after one whistle and let the turnip bowl for 5 minutes.
Step 11: Meanwhile, take a pan and add one tablespoon of oil.
Step 12: Let it heat and add cumin, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and ginger paste.
Step 13: Saute the spices until golden brown. Now add tomato and green chilli paste to it and cook on medium flame.
Step 14: Now add peas to the spices and cover it to cook for 3 minutes on medium flame.
Step 15: Add sugar and salt once the peas get soft enough.
Step 16: Turn off the gas once the turnips are boiled. Take it out from the cooker.
Step 17: Mash the boiled turnips and add them to the roasted spices in the pan. Mix them well and let them cook for 3 minutes on medium flame.
Step 18: Turn off the flame and garnish the bharta with coriander leaves and lemon juice.
You can serve the bharta with chapati or paratha.
