Broken wheat rava upma is a staple breakfast in South Indian homes. It is also known as cracked wheat or samba rava and is called ‘Godhuma Rava’ in Telugu. Broken wheat (Dalia) is made from a special kind of whole wheat and has high nutritional values including fiber which comes from the husk of the wheat.
This dish is not only filling but also flavourful and its nutritious value get adds up with the addition of vegetables. Also, as wheat rava (dalia) is not refined, it has more nutrition in it compared to rava (semolina).
Moreover, this steaming hot breakfast dish can be made vegan just by adding oil instead of ghee. And you can have this delish dish with coconut chutney or sambar or even with curd.
What makes an upma recipe really special is that you can add the vegetables and other ingredients as per your liking!
How to Make Broken Wheat Rava Upma?
- In a pan, add some oil.
- Temper the oil with mustard, urad dal, chana dal.
- Add curry leaves chopped green chillies, and saute onion for a few minutes.
- Next, add vegetables like carrot and peas and fry them.
- Pour water and bring it to a boil.
- Then, add the broken wheat in a slow stream stirring with one of your hands.
- Sprinkle the salt and let it boil.
- When all the water is absorbed, remove the lid and mix well.
- Garnish with freshly grated coconut and enjoy!
