What Is The Difference Between Paneer And Cottage Cheese? Learn From The Expert

We often hear paneer and cottage cheese word being used interchangeably, making  a lot of us believe that these 2 are the same thing. Is it, however, the same thing? We spoke with Chef Eshaan Nagpal, the founder of Indian Bawarchi, to learn more about Paneer and cottage cheese. Here's what we found:

What Is Cottage Cheese?

Cottage cheese is a mild-flavored curd cheese with a smooth texture. Cottage cheese can be used in a variety of dishes and adds a pleasant twist to them. They go well with fruit, salads, as a dip, yoghurt, toast, and so on.

What Is Paneer?

Paneer is an Indian cheese that is  used in many Indian dishes. It has a delicate milky flavour and can be used in curries or grilled as a side dish, such as the popular Paneer Tikkas and so much more. They can also be used to enhance the flavour of pav bhaji, samosa, and other dishes.

Difference Between Paneer And Cottage Cheese


There isn't a lot of difference between Paneer and cottage cheese. The main difference is that:

To make paneer, milk is curdled resulting in separating the whey from the cottage cheese. When we wrap the cottage cheese in muslin cheesecloth and place a weight on both sides, up and down, it will set the cottage cheese. 

Keep a material on the bottom of the cottage cheese and something heavy on top of it to eliminate any remaining water and set the cottage cheese. This set cottage cheese is called paneer.

Good Source Of Protein

The most common dairy products found in every home are paneer and cottage cheese. They're both great ways to get protein into your body, making them a great option for vegetarians. Cottage cheese and paneer are high in protein and have numerous other health benefits too.
