What Is A Kalira?

For those who don’t know, traditionally, Kalire are the beautiful golden accessories worn on the wrists of Punjabi brides during the ‘Chooda Ceremony’ that takes place on the morning of their wedding day. They are beautifully hung like chandeliers on their choodas (bangles) by the bride’s friends or sisters.

You must have seen in many Punjabi celebrity weddings where the brides are hovering Kaleeras. It is actually a ceremony.

It is believed that when any kalira falls on anyone while hovering, it is considered a good omen. In simple terms, it means the next wedding that happens will be of that person. Isn’t this exciting?

What Is The Tradition?

Kalire are a symbol of the love and blessings a bride is showered with on her D-day.

Traditionally, they were made of dried coconuts and makhanas (lotus seeds) that are encrusted with nuts and dry fruits. It signifies that the newly-wed bride never runs out of food in her new home.

The Chooda is prepared by the bride’s maternal uncle and aunt and given to the bride. They even make it wear to the bride.

Then, the kaliras are tied to the bride’s Chooda by her friends and sisters. After that, the ritual is followed with the bride hovering her Kaliras above the heads of unmarried girls.

However, nowadays, a lot of brides buy kalire themselves because they want to wear a style of their own choice.
