Summer season equates to exposure to immense sweat, dust, and harmful sunrays. This invites multiple skin diseases and fungal infections like athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm causing discomfort, redness, itchiness, and swelling. Fungus prefer warm and damp conditions and mostly breed in our armpits, fingers, and toenails.
To know more about these skin infections and how to deal with them, we spoke to Dr Rupika Singh, MBBS, MD, Dermatologist and Founder at Akiya Aesthetics.
Tips To Prevent Fungal Infection In Summer
Maintain Hygiene
Poor hygiene is the leading cause of fungal infections. Shower daily, wipe away excess sweat, and wear clean clothes regularly during summer. Ensure using clean bath towels, pillow covers, and sheets to prevent bacterial transfer. Our expert advises, “Keep your personal hygiene products separate from others such as hair brushes, hand towels, razors, etc.”
Wear Comfortable Clothes
Wear loose cotton clothes in summer for utmost comfort. Cotton provides breathability and absorbs sweat leaving you dry. Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics as they boost sweat production.
Add Probiotics To Your Diet
Dr Singh says, “Probiotics contain good bacteria that help fight against fungal infections.” She recommends yoghurt and fermented foods like idli and dosa to prevent fungal infections.
Wear Comfortable Footwear
Ensure wearing comfortable footwear (White Shoes Cleaning Tips) made using breathable materials. Our expert advises against wearing the same shoes two days in a row to allow them to air out between uses. If your feet are prone to heavy sweating, consider wearing moisture-wicking socks and changing them throughout the day, if needed. Wear sandals and sliders to increase skin breathability.

Treat Infections Promptly
Dr Singh says, “If you notice signs of a fungal infection, such as redness, itching, or peeling skin, treat it promptly to prevent it from becoming more severe.” Antifungal creams (Anti-ageing Creams), ointments, and sprays can be effective for mild infections. However, if the infection persists, consult a doctor for treatment. “Avoid over-the-counter topical steroids like quadriderm, betnovate or tenovate cream,” she added.
Regularly Clean And Disinfect Your Environment
Fungi can linger on surfaces and clothing. Regular cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces in your house and wearing clean clothes, using clean towels, pillow covers, etc. can help prevent fungal infections.
