Cracked heels or heel fissures are one of the most common problems resulting in pain and discomfort. Under this skin condition, heels are susceptible to immense dryness, crack open and sometimes result in bleeding. Factors that cause cracked heels include long hours of standing, obesity, certain medical conditions, or inadequate foot care.

To understand the issue better and to seek an antidote, we spoke to Dr Shaurya Thakran, MBBS & MD, Founder of Rakshaa Aesthetics. She suggested a few home remedies that can be effective in curing cracked heels.

Home Remedies For Cracked Heel

Foot Exfoliation

Dr Shaurya recommends exfoliating your feet at least twice a week to maintain their health. She suggests, “Take a tub of warm and soapy water and dip your feet in it for about 20 minutes or up to the time the skin softens. Then use a foot scrubber or a pumice stone to scrub off the dead skin cells of your heels.”

Foot Moisturisation

Another way to fight the problem is by keeping your feet moisturised. This softens the skin and prevents its cracking. “Take an appreciable amount of foot cream and apply onto the affected area, massage it for 2-3 minutes and later cover it with a pair of clean soft cotton socks to enhance the absorption of moisturiser,” she recommends.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is perfect for its moisturising and antifungal properties. Dr Shaurya says, “Use a generous amount of coconut oil on your cracked feet at night, cover it up with cotton socks, and let it work overnight.”
