According to Hindu mythology, there was a demon named Tarakasura who attained immense powers by doing penance from Lord Shiva. He also got the boon that he would be killed only by Shiva's son. After receiving this boon, his atrocities increased, Shiva Shakti used their power to give birth to a son named Kartikey. It is believed that Kartikeya started to learn war skills in his childhood and his mother Parvati took the form of Skandamata and trained Kartikeya for the war. She was the one who equipped lord Kartikey with divine weapons. Even his spear was given to him by his mother. According to the story, when the powers of Tarakasura started overpowering Kartikey, he used that powerful spear to kill Tarakasura. Since then, it has been believed that worshipping Maa Skandamata brings happiness to those seeking children.
Navratri 2024 Day 5: Maa Skandamata Puja Rituals
Maa Skandamata is worshipped on the fifth day of Shardiya Navratri. Here are the puja rituals you can follow for blessings:
- Start with taking a bath and wearing white coloured clothes.
- It is considered auspicious to wear white on this day.
- Next, worship Kalash and then take a moment to meditate on Skandamata.
- Then offer flowers to the goddess. You are advised to offer white flowers as it is considered auspicious.
- Now offer Bhog and chant mantras.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु स्कंदमाता रूपेण संस्थिता.

शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी
महाबले महोत्साहे महाभय विनाशिनी
