According to the Shiva Purana, it is said that after the marriage of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati, she began to wear a crescent moon on her forehead resembling a bell. The married form of Maa Parvati is known as Maa Chandraghanta. In another tale, when Mahishasura attacked heaven, all the gods were terrified of his intentions as he waged war for supremacy over the heavens.
In response, Indra and other gods approached Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh to inform them about Mahishasura's ambitions. The three deities became very angry, and a powerful energy emerged from them, which became known as Maa Chandraghanta. Subsequently, all the gods bestowed their weapons upon her, enabling Maa Chandraghanta to slay Mahishasura and liberate them.
It is believed that Maa holds a trident, sword, and mace in her hands to remove all sorrows from her devotees. A half-moon shaped like a bell adorns her forehead, leading devotees to call her Maa Chandraghanta.
