Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is a Hindu fast observed on the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the moon) of the month of Paush. It is a very important fast for Hindus, especially for those who wish to have a child (son). This year Pausha Putrada Ekadashi Vrat will be observed on January 21, 2024, Sunday.

Since this Ekadashi takes place during the Hindu month of Pausha, it is known as ‘Pausha Putrada Ekadashi’. The Hindi word ‘Putrada’ means ‘giver of sons’. It is believed that observing this fast will grant the devotee a son who is healthy, wealthy, and virtuous.

According to the legend, it says that Lord Krishna taught King Yudhishthira (the eldest of the five Pandavas) the story of Putrada Ekadashi. Bhadravati was governed by a King named Suketuman once. He was a generous and caring king, but he had an unsatisfactory life overall. He never committed a sin, had no illegally acquired money in his treasure, and always upheld the principles of love and fairness. But what worried him greatly was that he had no son to inherit his kingdom after his death. He felt that he would never be happy in this life or any other one if he didn't have a son.

Then one day he started walking in the woods to clear his head since he was depressed. When he got to the lake's edge, he noticed a number of sages living there. He asked them if they could assist him after kindly sharing his suffering with them. They were touched by his gesture and asked him to pray to Lord Vishnu for a son and observe a fast on Paush Shukla Paksha Ekadashi. The king carried out what he had been instructed with full dedication and faith. The queen found she was pregnant after a few days, and nine months later they were blessed with a son. Since then, couples who want to have children, especially sons, follow the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi fast.
