Thunderbolts Director Jake Schreier Brings MCU's 36th Entry

Jake Schreier directed ‘Thunderbolts,’ which stands as the 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The director, known for his work on ‘Paper Towns’ and ‘Robot & Frank,’ brought his unique vision to this darker Marvel story.

The screenplay was crafted by Eric Pearson, who previously wrote 'Black Widow.' Kevin Feige produced the film under Marvel Studios, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures handling distribution.

Thunderbolts Star-Studded Cast Returns to MCU

‘Thunderbolts’ reunites several familiar faces from previous Marvel films. Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, while Florence Pugh returns as Yelena Belova/Black Widow assassin. David Harbour continues as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, bringing his comedic timing to the ensemble.

The cast also includes Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent, Lewis Pullman as Robert ‘Bob’ Reynolds/Sentry, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus returning as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Additional team members include Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster.

Thunderbolts Plot Explores Anti-Hero Team Dynamics

The story centres around a group of anti-heroes brought together by CIA Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine for covert government operations. However, the team soon discovers they have walked into a trap. To survive, they must expose de Fontaine while confronting their troubled pasts and facing a powerful enemy named Sentry.

Based on Marvel Comics, the film explores deeper themes, including mental health, isolation, trauma, depression, and the consequences of suppressing emotions. These elements set 'Thunderbolts' apart from traditional superhero narratives.

Thunderbolts Box Office Performance

Despite securing the eighth position among 2025's highest-grossing films, ‘Thunderbolts’ underperformed at the global box office. The movie earned approximately $382 million worldwide against its substantial $180 million production budget.

The film was originally titled ‘Thunderbolts’ but received the alternate title ‘The New Avengers’ in select international markets. This naming strategy aimed to capitalise on the popularity of the Avengers brand.
