The highly anticipated action film ‘Thug Life’ was released in the theatres on June 5, 2025. Despite a massive pre-release buzz, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's starrer film failed to make a mark whatsoever. Despite the star power and hype, the gangster movie received negative reviews from the audience and critics, struggled at the box office, and got caught up in controversies. After a disappointing performance at the box office, the OTT debut is a second chance for the film.
Thug Life OTT Release
After an underwhelming theatrical run, Thug Life is arriving on OTT sooner than expected. The action film is available to watch on Netflix, starting today on July 3, 2025. Those who missed watching the film on the silver screen can now watch it on OTT. The movie is available in multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Netflix took to its official Instagram handle to share the poster of the film. “It is a battle between Death and Rangaraya Sakthivel. Want to see who wins the game? Watch Thug Life, now on Netflix in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam,” read the caption.

Thug Life And Netflix Controversy
Soon after Thug Life’s release in theatres, it landed in controversy with the OTT partner. Producers breached a contract that mandates the film must run in the theatres for at least 8 weeks before its OTT release. Since the film was released on OTT in just 4 weeks, Netflix reportedly imposed a Rs. 25 lakh penalty on the makers for reducing the theatrical-to-OTT window. The deal was originally valued at Rs 135 crore but has now scaled by Rs 110 crore.
Thug Life Plot, Cast, And More
The movie follows the life of Rangaraya Sakthivel, an aging gangster seeking revenge on those who betrayed him. Besides Haasan, the film also stars Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, and Aishwarya Lekshmi.
A review from Sajin Shrijith of THE WEEK read, “Where do I begin? There is, maybe, 40 per cent of Thug Life that's quite solid — and most of it is the pre-interval segments — when the film remains in gangster movie mode, with some tense sequences... However, once we reach post-interval, the film reveals other, strange inclinations. Let's just say that it sometimes wants to be ‘Nayakan 2.0’ at others, Batman Begins and John Wick.”
