Extended Deadlines for Disaster-Affected Areas

The IRS has provided automatic extensions to taxpayers in 12 states and they can now file their 2024 taxes at later deadlines due to natural disasters. The extended deadlines vary by state and region as follows:

  • May 1, 2025 - Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Virginia.
  • October 15, 2025 - California wildfire victims in Los Angeles County.
  • November 3, 2025 - Kentucky and several counties in West Virginia.

How Does A Tax Extension Work?

A federal tax extension allows taxpayers additional time to file their return. However, it's essential to note that this is strictly an extension to file, not to pay. If you owe taxes, you must still make your payment by April 15 to avoid penalties or interest.
