A partial lunar eclipse will be visible on July 16 and July 17. It is believed that the penumbral lunar eclipse will start from 12:13 am on 17th July and will enter the umbra region at 1:31 am. The intensity of the partial lunar eclipse will maximize at 3:00 am and it will end around 4:30 am.
According to experts and our Hindu culture, there are certain practices that are followed during this period, which also include storing food with tulsi leaves. It is believed that food gets contaminated during a lunar eclipse and may have harmful effects on the body.
What Is Lunar Eclipse?
A partial lunar eclipse takes place when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon and casts its shadow over the Moon. The Earth completely cuts off the Moon's source of illumination which makes it appear dark. But when the Moon is fully covered by Earth's shadow, it is called a full lunar eclipse.

Importance Of Tulsi
Tulsi or Holy Basil is a sacred plant according to Hindu belief. Also known as Tulasi, people regard it as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Tulsi, who was a great worshipper of the Lord Vishnu. Tulsi plays an important role in our lives, and can protect you from eclipse's harmful energy.
- People avoid cooking, eating, and drinking lunar eclipses. They believe food spoils faster in the absence of the sun’s light and may cause digestive related problems. But placing some tulsi leaves in food container will protect your food from getting contaminated.
- Start your food by eating Tulsi leaves first, as it will protect you from diseases. But make sure that you don't chew it; instead gulp it down with water. It is because Tulsi contains Mercury which can damage your teeth and gums.

- It is considered inauspicious to pluck tulsi leaves during the lunar eclipse. Hence, store them before it starts.
- It is believed that Tulsi has the power to ward off negative energy and doshas. According to Hindu mythology, a basil plant kept outside the home is the best solution to prevent negative energy and doshas from entering in your lives.
