Republic Day 2025 History
Although India gained independence on August 15, 1947, it did not have its constitution until January 26, 1950. Dr BR Ambedkar, who chaired the Constituent Assembly, led the drafting of the Constitution to replace the Government of India Act. The final draft was submitted to the Assembly on November 4, 1948.
A few months later, on January 26, 1950, Dr Rajendra Prasad, India's first President, hoisted the Indian National Flag, accompanied by a 21-gun salute. This moment marked India’s transition to a republic, and January 26 was officially declared Republic Day to commemorate this historic milestone.
