Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, has arrived. Since the Islamic calendar follows the moon cycle, Ramadan shifts about 10 days earlier each year. In India, Ramadan began on March 12 after the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on March 10.
During this month, Muslims worldwide fast from sunrise to sunset. They have two main meals: Iftar, eaten after sunset, and Sehri, consumed before dawn. Many Muslims are preparing for a month of fasting and festivities. They wake up before sunrise for a pre-fasting meal called suhoor and break their fast at sunset with iftar.
Here are the average fasting hours in cities globally, as per Al Jazeera. However, actual fasting hours may vary each day, along with the calculation methods.

The Significance of Ramadan
According to Islamic tradition, Ramadan (Ramadan 2024: Step-By-Step Guide For Daily Routine And Duas For Keeping And Breaking Fast) dates back to the seventh century when the Prophet Muhammad received the first verses of the Quran during this month. The revelation of the Quran to Muhammad began on the 27th night of Ramadan, known as Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Power. Muslims consider this night the holiest of the year, believing that prayers on this night are more valuable than prayers for a thousand months.
Fasting during Ramadan (Ramadan 2024: Know The Meaning of Taraweeh, The Special Prayer Offered By Muslims During This Holy Month) is based on the Quran's instruction to ‘fast for a fixed number of days.’ Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours throughout the month. They break their fast at sunset with iftar, usually consisting of dates, water, and a light meal. After iftar, Muslims perform the Maghrib prayer, the fourth of the five daily prayers in Islam.
