On Sunday, Pune Police dismissed a rape complaint filed by a 22-year-old data scientist, labelling it a ‘false complaint’ that misled investigators. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced that the woman's allegations against an unknown delivery agent were completely fabricated.
The woman had claimed that a stranger, posing as a courier delivery agent, entered her Kondhwa flat on Wednesday, bolted the door, sprayed a chemical to render her unconscious, and sexually assaulted her. She alleged the assailant took a selfie using her phone and left a threatening message before fleeing.
However, police revealed significant inconsistencies in her statement within 24 hours of the complaint being filed.

Pune Delivery Agent Rape Case Investigation
"It was found that the woman had filed a false complaint. Her complaint misled the Pune Police," Kumar stated during a press conference. The commissioner expressed concerns about attempts to damage the city's reputation through fabricated narratives.
"Just two days ago, an incident came before Pune City Police, which was used to create a narrative that law and order concerning women in Pune has completely collapsed, and efforts were made to portray Pune as unsafe for women. By deploying the full resources of the police administration, we solved the case within 24 hours. No one should try to defame Pune, a city known to be one of the safest, through fake narratives," Kumar explained.
Pune Delivery Agent Rape Case: Selfie and Threat Message Fabricated
The investigation revealed that the man in the selfie was known to the woman and had been invited to her apartment. "They have known each other for years and belong to the same community," Kumar said, as quoted by PTI. "The selfie was taken by the woman herself and later edited to partially hide his face. The threatening message was typed by her too."
The man, described as a highly qualified professional, was detained and questioned during the investigation. Forensic analysis found no evidence of chemical spray being used, and CCTV footage showed no unknown visitors entering the housing complex. The apartment's digital entry system also recorded no delivery agents at the specified time.
Commissioner Kumar addressed the woman's psychological state during the investigation. "No chemical spray was used. The girl's mental state is not good at present. The rape part is still under investigation," he stated.
The case had initially been registered under sections 64 (rape), 77 (voyeurism), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Forensic teams had collected samples from the alleged crime scene, and her phone was seized for digital analysis.

Pune Delivery Agent Rape Case: Consensual Meeting Turned Into False Complaint
New details emerged revealing the actual sequence of events. "There is a part of consent in the case, and this consent we have already established," Commissioner Kumar said. "The woman called her friend to her house. The selfie was clicked with her consent, which she later edited. The woman complained to the police about an unknown courier delivery person, which is not the case."
Kumar added that claims of forced entry and chemical spray usage were also "misleading." Investigators now believe the woman argued with the man she had invited over, after which she decided to file the false complaint.

Pune Delivery Agent Rape Case: Professor's Role in Fabricating the Case
A significant development emerged when Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Rajkumar Shinde revealed that a professor at a private engineering college had guided the complainant in drafting and filing the false complaint.
"The professor is the complainant's friend and guide and was in touch with the complainant on Wednesday. During investigations, we realised that the complainant had sought all the directions from the professor to lodge her complaint and on how to deal with investigating authorities," Shinde said.
The professor's statement has been recorded, and further questioning may follow as the investigation continues.
Complainant's Background and Current Status
The woman, a BE (Data Science) graduate working at an IT company in Kalyaninagar, was living in Pune's Kalyaninagar area with her younger brother. She was alone at the time of the alleged incident.
Police questioned her in the presence of the man she had accused. The investigation revealed that she wrote the threatening message herself after he left the apartment. A medical report from Sassoon General Hospital has been received but is said to be inconclusive.
The woman has since been referred for counselling and has recorded her statement before a Judicial Magistrate First Class. Police noted that her frequent changes in the sequence of events prompted further scrutiny of her claims.
