OpenAI has been on a streak, rolling out new features and models one after another. And if you thought the AI powerhouse would slow down after its latest image-generation breakthrough, think again. OpenAI is now making ChatGPT even more personalised.
In a recent update announced on its official X account, the company revealed that ChatGPT can now remember details from past conversations. This enhancement allows the AI to provide more tailored responses, offer better advice, and assist with everything from writing projects to learning objectives.
Let’s dive deeper into what this new feature brings to the table.
OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT's Memory Feature
In an early morning post on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Sam Altman shared his enthusiasm about an upcoming feature, writing, “A few times a year I wake up early and can't fall back asleep because we are launching a new feature I’ve been so excited about for so long. Today is one of those days!” His comment has ignited speculation across the AI community, with many eagerly anticipating details about the surprise update.
This announcement follows a significant update from Altman just days earlier, on April 4, 2025, where he revealed changes to OpenAI’s release schedule. Rather than following previous expectations, the company now plans to introduce models codenamed o3 and o4-mini in the coming weeks, delaying the much-anticipated GPT-5 launch until later this year.
“Change of plans: we are going to release o3 and o4-mini after all, probably in a couple of weeks, and then do GPT-5 in a few months,” Altman posted. “There are a bunch of reasons for this, but the most exciting one is that we are going to be able to make GPT-5 much better than we originally thought.”

How Will This New Feature Work?
While memory isn’t a brand-new feature in ChatGPT, this latest update takes it to another level. Now, when you start a conversation, the AI can seamlessly build on what it already knows about you, your preferences, interests, and past exchanges which makes responses feel more personalised rather than starting from scratch each time.
OpenAI reassures users that they remain in control. You can disable memory entirely or prevent ChatGPT from referencing previous conversations. If you’ve already turned memory off, you won’t be affected by this update. Plus, if you ever want to review or modify what ChatGPT remembers, you can simply ask.
For those times when you prefer a fresh start, the option to use a temporary chat remains available, ensuring that no personal details are stored or referenced.

In other news, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the development of GPT-4.5 and what lies ahead. “A lot of people were interested in how we made GPT-4.5 and what comes next,” he wrote.
