On this day, we celebrate the Indian Handloom weavers for keeping our country’s rich culture alive and flourishing.

Origin Of National Handloom Day

The history of Handloom Day dates back to 1905 when the handloom industry was a pivotal aspect of India’s struggle for independence. The Swadeshi movement bore significant implications for the handloom industry. Its core objective was to strengthen domestic production and curtail dependence on imports, leading to the widespread adoption of khadi fabric in households across the nation.

Near the Princess Park near India Gate, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the khadi-made Indian flag, symbolising the country's journey toward freedom at the ‘stroke of midnight hour.’ With its inception on August 7, the Swadeshi Movement lent its significance to the observation of National Handloom Day. On August 7, 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the Handloom Day and since then, it has been celebrated every year.
