The Queen of Melody Lata Mangeshkar, who gave voice to thousands of songs for Bollywood films, passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday (6th February). The news of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passing away broke the hearts of the entire nation and left us all grieving, as she was one of the most loving singers in the history of the Indian music industry. 

 

For much of independent India's three-quarter-century, her voice has rung out on television sets, crackly airways, and movie theaters, earning her the title "the Nightingale." 

 

Lata Ji recorded thousands of songs over her decade-long career (1929-2022), each one pleasing our ears even more. In honour of the great singer, we've compiled a selection of 10 songs that will always melt your heart and reign supreme on your playlist, forever.

1 Lag Ja Gale

Lag Ja Gale is a beautiful sweet and sad romantic song from the 1964 film 'Woh Kaun Thi.'  The song has lyrics that touch every heart which is beautifully sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song is one of the biggest hits of Mangeshkar's all time career. In fact, in an interview, the veteran vocalist named this song as one of her top six favourite songs. The song stars Manoj Kumar and Sadhana Shivdasani.

10 Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jana

'Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jana' is another of Mangeshkar's beautiful tunes. We can not forget  Raj and Simran romance in the mustard field in SRK and Kajol's iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in the song 'Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jana'. The song was sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar.

2 Luka Chupi

The beautiful song Luka Chupi is also sung by the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. The song is sung with such grace that it struck everyone's heart as soon as it was released, and it still is and will continue to be a song close to everyone's heart. The song is beautifully based on the relationship between a mother and her child, and is heavily filled with emotion. The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and A.R. Rahman, and it is still considered one of the best duets of all time.

3 Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo

This song is one of the most special songs. On Republic Day, January 26, 1963, two months after the Sino-Indian War, Lata Mangeshkar sung the patriotic song 'Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo' for the first time in New Delhi's National Stadium in the presence of then President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The song was so pure that it moved then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to tears.

Lata Ji, during an event in Mumbai, held to mark the 51st anniversary of Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, recalled that when the event ended, she was informed that Nehru wanted to speak with her. “At first I was nervous, thinking I have made some mistake. But when I met Panditji (Nehru), I saw tears in his eyes. He said, ‘Lata, tumne aaj mujhe rula diya’.

4 Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai

'Ek Pyar ka Nagma Hai,' sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, is a timeless romantic song written by great poet Santosh Anand and with wonderful lyrics. This song is from the film SHOR, starring Manoj Kumar and Nanda. 

5 Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi

From the film Aandhi comes this unforgettable song sung by Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. The film is directed by Gulzar and stars Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen in the key roles. 'Tere Bina Zindagi Se' was also ranked sixth on the Binaca Geetmala yearly list for 1975. The melody is so enchanting that it reaches the soul. Every word sung in the song shakes the strings of the heart. This is without a doubt one of the legend's best songs.

6 Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera

'Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera' is a song from Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna's 1969 romantic film, Aradhana. The lyrics of the song are by Anand Bakshi, Burman wrote the music for the songs of Aradhana with his son, Rahul Dev Burman. They completed the recording of the songs in the voices of Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd. Rafi and S.D. Burman himself. The song is a true treasure. Every aspect of this song is wonderful- the location, videography, Rajesh, Sharmila, and especially the melody.

7 Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh

"Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh" from the film "Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai" starring Raaj Kumar, Meena Kumari, and Nadira, is sung by the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.  Shailendra wrote the lyrics of this beautiful song. This song is timeless and of a kind that  touches everyone’s heart no matter which age or generation they may belong to.

8 Inhi Logon Ne

Inhi Logon Ne song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar is a classic, composed by Ghulam Mohammad and Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the lyrics. It is a powerful song and has captured every heart.

 

9 Hoto Pe Aisi Baat Daba Ke

One of the unforgettable song of Lata ji is, 'Hoto Pe Aisee Baat Daba Ke.' Hoto Pe Aisee Baat Daba Ke song creates perfect suspense and the tuning and beats are completely on point.
