It was revealed in court that the survivor, who suffered a panic attack during the assault, was given an inhaler by one of the accused, not to help her recover, but so the abuse could continue. As the investigation unfolds, shocking updates continue to emerge, pointing to serious lapses in campus safety.

On June 25, 2025, a 24‑year‑old law student was allegedly raped inside South Calcutta Law College. According to her statement, two senior students and a former student took her to the guard’s room, where the assault took place. Following her complaint, the police arrested four men - Monojit Mishra (31) - the prime accused, Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukherjee (20) - two students, and security guard Pinaki Banerjee (55).

As per the latest update, during the assault, she suffered a panic attack and became breathless. According to the public prosecutor, one of the accused obtained an inhaler, not to help her heal, but to revive her so the assault could continue.

Chief Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told a court in the city on Tuesday, “When the victim had a panic attack and was unable to breathe, the accused persons, instead of taking her to a hospital, gave her an inhaler so that she feels better and they could torture her again.”

Police Statement On The Accused's Arrest

Kolkata’s Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rupesh Kumar, confirmed that Manojit Mishra and Zaid Ahmed were arrested on the evening of Thursday, July 26, 2025. The third accused, Promit Mukherjee, was taken into custody shortly after midnight on Friday, July 27, 2025. Police have also seized the mobile phones of all three for investigating the case.

An officer said, “She alleged that the three accused forced her into the guardroom on the ground floor of the college building, where the sexual assault took place between 7.30 pm and 10.50 pm on Wednesday.” The officer further stated, “A preliminary medical examination of the victim has been conducted. Witnesses have been examined and their statements recorded. The scene of the alleged crime has been visited and secured, pending forensic examination.”

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the police arrested Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard who was on duty at the time of the incident. The following Tuesday, the court sent him to police custody until July 4, 2025, for further questioning.

  • Monojit Mishra (31) - the prime accused, Trinamool Congress student leader, and former student of the college

  • Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) - two students

  • Pinaki Banerjee (55) - security guard of South Calcutta Law College.

On July 1, 2025, all four arrested were brought before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Alipore. The court sent them to police custody until July 8, 2025, for further investigation.

The case has been registered under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) laws. The charges include wrongful confinement under Section 127(2), gangrape under Section 70(1), and committing the crime with shared intent under Section 3(5).

Disciplinary Action By College Authorities

All three accused in the Kolkata law student rape case have been expelled with immediate effect from the college on July 1, 2025.

College Vice-Principal Nayna Chatterji said, “Not just expulsion, we are all demanding that they be hanged.” She also made it clear that from now on, no one will be allowed on campus without a valid permanent identity card.

Haripada Banik, a member of the general body, said, “We had informed the authorities about Mishra’s behaviour on multiple occasions. We were constantly in fear of him. There was threat culture in every corner of this college.”

Police Assure Action And Warn Against Identity Leak

Commissioner of Police in Kolkata, Manoj Kumar Verma, said, “The case is under investigation. Since the case is very sensitive, we do not want to share details. However, the FIR was prompt. The three accused were arrested within 12 hours, and one more person was arrested soon after. We have collected a lot of evidence, which is being analysed. The investigation is underway.”

Kolkata Police also issued a message on social media, warning that strict legal action would be taken against anyone trying to reveal the survivor’s identity.
