According to mythology, the women observing the fast are supposed to worship the moon god on this day before breaking their fast for blessings. Behind the late moonrise on this occasion are many mythological and scientific reasons.

Why Does Moon Rise Late On Karwa Chauth?
According to the scriptures, the moon that rises on Karwa Chauth is also the moon of Kartik month and is considered to be Shiva’s symbolic presence after penance. Looking at this moon and worshipping it is considered to be very auspicious and beneficial.
Well, the moon takes 27.3 days to revolve around the Earth and for the completion of this revolution, it rotates at around 12 degrees to the east every day. This leads to the delay in moonrise by 48 minutes every day and this is also the reason behind different placement of the moon in the sky every day.

Due to the 12 degrees rotation, the moon gradually stops being visible before the next full moon and the new moon phase begins. In such a situation, the time of moonrise is not seen but the angle of the moon is taken into consideration.

Following this pattern, it is observed that on every Chauth Tithi of the month, the moon rises late. This is also the reason behind the three-hour delay in the moon's rise on the day of Karwa Chauth as it falls four days after the full moon and if 48 is multiplied by 4, it is 192 minutes (3 hours 12 minutes) and hence the moon rises approximately three hours after sunset.
