Growing up with animals has a profound impact on children, as has been justified in several research papers over the past. They learn empathy, develop a sense of curiosity, and develop a love for nature. A 2008 study noted that kids attached to animals “can promote healthy social development, social competence, increased social interaction, improved social communication, and social play.” However, parents, caregivers, and guardians usually remain wary of introducing children to animals because of the gap in perceiving the signals from the other side. In this light, we have listed out five animals you can consider as your first pets to introduce animals to children.

5 Perfect First Pets for Kids

An animal in the household fosters many positive emotions in children while growing up, as has been established in numerous papers in the past. But before getting a pet, one must introduce animals to them step by step. Pictorial depiction and representation can be a good starting point, followed by visiting zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. Eventually, if one wants a pet, it’s advisable to wait for the child to be at least 4.

Animals

In that light, the following five animals can be considered as first pets for the children:

1) Fish

Easy to care for and low-upkeep, fish can be great first-time pets. Some, like betta fish, goldfish, guppies, and neon tetras, are easiest to maintain. Get them their food and change the water periodically, and you are good to go. Avoid options like Discus, German Blue Rams, and certain cichlids, as they have particular water and dietary requirements that may be difficult to support.

2) Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are the cutest playmates for children. Amicable, social, and comparatively low-maintenance, these small cuties can provide companionship and also may teach children responsibility. However, adult supervision is required for young kids since guinea pigs are fragile creatures.

3) Turtle

They are slow, cute, and live for long periods of time. However, before going for a turtle, do note that the law allows only certain species to be domesticated. So, go through the wildlife and forest department websites before bringing home a turtle. Rest, they can be really awesome friends to your children, teaching them patience and tolerance.

4) Birds

Of course, not all birds are good first-time pets, but some, like budgies/parakeets, cockatiels, and canaries, can be good picks. They are smooth to maintain and friendly. Dove is also a considerable choice if you want a quiet bird in your house.

5) Rabbits

Playful, social, and gentle, rabbits highly qualify as first-time pets for children. They will hop around the house, keeping your kid engaged all the time. However, they need daily care like feeding, watering, and a clean habitat. Rabbits also need a lot of space, so get them only if you can provide them with all these.

Now, when introducing animals to children, dogs and cats are obvious choices. However, dogs, especially, need a lot of investment. Be it time, energy, or money. And then, there’s a risk of injuries and scratch marks. So, get them when the child is somewhat nearing 10 years. But, whichever animal you get as pets, it will always teach your children about empathy, care, responsibility, and safety.
