Supplies Needed For Growing ZZ Plant In A Bottle

  • A glass bottle or jar (wide-necked if possible)
  • Small pebbles or gravel
  • Activated charcoal (optional but recommended)
  • Well-draining potting mix (ideally one made for succulents)
  • A ZZ plant cutting or small rooted plant
  • A spoon or stick (to help with planting)
  • A spray bottle or watering can

Step-by-Step Guide to Growing ZZ in a Bottle:

1. Pick the Right Bottle

Choose a transparent glass bottle or jar with a neck wide enough to insert the plant. Clear containers allow you to monitor root growth and soil moisture.

2. Create a Drainage Layer

Add 1–2 inches of small pebbles or gravel at the bottom. This helps excess water settle away from the roots.

3. Add Charcoal (Optional but Useful)

A thin layer of activated charcoal over the pebbles will prevent mould and keep the soil smelling fresh.

4. Add Potting Mix

Fill the bottle about halfway with a well-draining potting mix. A succulent mix works well since ZZ plants dislike soggy soil.

5. Plant the ZZ Cutting

Gently insert the cutting or small ZZ plant into the soil. Use a stick or spoon to guide and position the roots, especially if the bottle has a narrow neck.

6. Place It in Indirect Light

ZZ plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight but also tolerate low light. Avoid placing them in harsh direct sunlight.

7. Water Sparingly

Water lightly—just enough to moisten the soil. Since there's no drainage, it's important not to overwater. Wait until the topsoil feels dry before watering again.

8. Keep the Glass Clean

Wipe the inside of the bottle every couple of weeks to prevent fogging and check for any fungal growth.

Swaminathan adds, “The ZZ plant is perfect for busy people. Once it’s set, it practically takes care of itself. Just don’t overwater it.”
