How To Grow Rosemary Plant In A Bottle: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prepare the Bottle

Cut the bottle in half or make a wide opening near the top, depending on the shape you prefer. If using the full bottle as a planter, poke a few drainage holes at the bottom with a heated screwdriver or nail.

2. Add a Drainage Layer

Place a layer of small stones or pebbles at the bottom of the bottle. This helps prevent waterlogging, which rosemary doesn’t tolerate well.

3. Fill with Potting Mix

Add well-draining potting soil up to three-quarters of the bottle. You can mix sand or perlite into the soil for better drainage.

4. Plant Your Rosemary

If you're using a rosemary cutting, make sure it's about four to six inches long. Remove the leaves from the bottom two inches of the stem and place it in water for a few days until roots begin to appear. Once rooted, plant it in the bottle soil. If you’re using a small nursery plant, gently transfer it into the bottle planter.

5. Water Lightly

Water just enough to moisten the soil. Rosemary prefers slightly dry conditions, so avoid overwatering. Swaminathan recommends checking the top inch of soil, so only water when it feels dry.

6. Choose the Right Spot

Place the bottle in a sunny spot as rosemary needs at least six to eight hours of sunlight a day. A kitchen windowsill, balcony, or sunny desk works perfectly.

7. Care and Maintenance

Rosemary loves the sun and doesn’t like wet feet. Keep the roots dry and give it sunlight, it will grow beautifully in a bottle for months.
