How To Convert An Old Bed Sheet Into Room Curtains Or Cushion Covers

Here's how to convert an old bed sheet into room curtains or cushion covers, with two easy-to-follow projects.

Project 1: Turning A Bed Sheet Into Room Curtains

This is a simple, high-impact project that can instantly refresh a room.

What You'll Need:

  • An old bed sheet
  • A measuring tape and a pencil
  • Fabric scissors
  • A sewing machine or fabric glue
  • Curtain clips or rings

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • First, measure the height and width of your window. Add a few extra inches to the height for stitching and about 4-6 inches to the width for a gathered look. Cut your bed sheet to these dimensions.
  • Fold the cut edges of your fabric over about half an inch and either sew them with a straight stitch or use a strong fabric glue to secure the stitch.
  • Once the curtains are stitched, lay them flat and evenly space your curtain clips or rings along the top edge. Clip them on, and you're ready to hang them on your curtain rod. For a more traditional look, you can sew a rod pocket at the top instead of using clips.

Project 2: Turning A Bed Sheet Into Cushion Covers

This project is a great way to use the leftover fabric from your curtains or an old sheet to create a cohesive look in your room.

What You'll Need:

  • An old bed sheet
  • A pillow or cushion insert
  • Fabric scissors, thread, and a needle or sewing machine
  • A zipper or buttons

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Measure the width of your cushion insert. You'll need one piece of fabric that is the same width as your cushion and about 1.5 times the length.
  • Fold the two short edges of your fabric over about a half-inch and sew a simple hem.
  • Lay the fabric out, right-side down. Fold the two stitched edges in toward the centre so they overlap, creating an envelope-like opening. The total length should now match your cushion insert.
  • Sew a straight stitch along the two open sides to create the cushion cover. Turn it right-side out, and you're ready to insert your cushion.
