Expert Talk On Difficult Parents

The significance of a family, especially parents, is an unsaid fact, as the family typically becomes the first social agency in any individual’s life. The parent-child relationship assumes a significant role not just in being the first form of attachment but also in nurturing and development of the individual throughout the life span.

Dr. Samir Parikh Psychatrist at Fortis hospital, believes that while a stable family structure is undoubtedly given a lot of importance, the struggle actually does remain the same for any parental figure.

Here are some of the points which could be kept in mind while considering the parent child relationship for all of us, and are not to be restricted to single parents only:

Mutual Respect And Trust Is Vital

Not just for a parent-child relationship, but for any relationship to be sustained with harmony, trust and mutual respect is an essential ingredient. Therefore, it is important for you to be able to earn as well as offer such a trust as a cornerstone of the relationship with your parent.

Understand The Parental Role

What is important to note is that while the family structure does have a significant impact on an individual’s life and development, however, the relationship of a child with the parental figure remains the same be it a single parent or for both parents.

Strike A Balance Between Giving Space And Support

Especially in today’s times of digitalisation, it is important for us to be able to strike a balance by spending an appropriate amount of quality time together as a family, while also being available for each other.

However, this also should not be overdone, as it is equally important for each individual, be it a child or the parent, to have some ‘me-time’ and space for him/herself.

Have An Open Communication System

This cannot be emphasised enough, as an open communication system ensures not only clarity but also prevents conflicts and helps building a sense of trust between two individuals in a relationship, again not restricted to a parent child relationship.

At the same time, it is important to be able to create such a safe and threat free environment to allow the child or the parent to be able to freely communicate and express him or herself and avoid assumptions or jumping to conclusions.

Share The Burden And Build A Mutual Empathy

Being a parent can be a challenging experience in itself, as it is inherent with both joys as well as struggles, and is a journey filled with a plethora of experiences for both the child as well as the parent.

Undoubtedly, the challenges could increase for a single parent. Therefore, it is important to be able to consider each other’s perspective and be able to put ourselves in each other’s shoes to be able to truly empathise and help share the burden with each other as a cohesive unit of the family.

Remember To Have Fun With Your Parent!

It is important for you to be able to have fun and enjoy with your parent! Be it sharing experiences, spending time together, or even doing chores together, finding happiness in the smallest of things can go a long way to de-stress both you and your parent.
