Role of Lactation Consultants
“Lactation consultants play a vital role in providing emotional support, boosting confidence, and offering practical breastfeeding techniques. They address issues such as latching difficulties and milk supply concerns, especially for mothers who have had a caesarean (C-section) delivery or a preterm birth. Their guidance can make a significant difference in the breastfeeding experience,” said Dr Parinaaz.
Breastfeeding Techniques
The choice of breastfeeding positions can be influenced by the type of delivery. “For instance, caesarean sections may require modified positions to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Lactation consultants can help mothers find the best positions that work for them, ensuring a successful breastfeeding experience,” said Parhar.

Educational Support
Continuous education and counselling throughout pregnancy and after delivery are crucial for addressing the specific concerns of IVF mothers. Providing ongoing support and information can help these mothers succeed in their breastfeeding journey, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.
Nutritional Needs
“IVF mothers have similar nutritional needs to other postpartum mothers, though those with twins or preterm births may require a higher calorie intake. Incorporating galactagogues—foods known to support milk production, such as garlic, oats, fenugreek seeds and green leafy vegetables—is beneficial. Proper hydration is also essential for maintaining milk supply,” concluded Dr Parhar.
