A massive nationwide strike called Bharat Bandh is set for Wednesday, July 9, 2025. This protest is organised by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions alongside farmers’ and rural workers’ groups. The bandh aims to oppose government policies labelled by the unions as pro-corporate and anti-worker.
Organisers anticipate participation from more than 25 crore workers spanning formal and informal sectors, with farmers and agricultural labourers joining from rural India.
Trade Unions Leading the Bharat Bandh
Ten prominent trade unions are spearheading this nationwide protest: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), and Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) form the core leadership. Other participating unions include the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), and Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC).
The Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC) complete the coalition.

Bharat Bandh July 9, 2025: Schools, Colleges, and Offices Closed?
Most schools, colleges, and private offices are expected to remain open on July 9, 2025. However, transport disruptions could lead to delays or interruptions, especially in cities where trade unions and allied groups plan protest marches and road blockades.
Public buses, taxis, and app-based cabs may face service cuts, resulting in longer travel times and possible cancellations. Daily commuters are advised to plan and expect traffic diversions.
Bharat Bandh July 9, 2025: Train Services Closed?
No official announcement has been made about a nationwide railway strike. However, since protests and road blockades are likely in multiple states, train services may experience delays or disruptions in certain regions.
Railway unions have not formally joined the bandh, but past strikes have seen protestors demonstrate near railway stations and tracks.
Why Are Workers Striking? Unions’ Demands
The unions allege the government has not conducted the Indian Labour Conference in the last ten years. They oppose four new labour codes that they claim weaken unions and increase working hours.
Organisations criticise the promotion of contractual jobs and privatisation while ignoring demands for more public sector recruitment and wage hikes. They argue the government offers incentives to employers without addressing youth unemployment.
Farmer groups and rural labour organisations have extended their support to the July 9 bandh. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and agricultural workers' unions plan to mobilise villagers and protest against economic decisions they claim worsen rural distress.
They allege government actions are causing rising unemployment, higher prices of essential goods, and cuts in health, education, and welfare spending.
