Nineteen years after The Devil Wears Prada, a sequel is officially underway. On July 1, Disney’s 20th Century Studios shared a teaser on Instagram. The post quickly garnered attention, signalling the return of a cinematic icon.

20th Century Studios confirmed the sequel's production through an Instagram announcement featuring a striking teaser of two devilish red pumps. The joint post, shared by Disney's 20th Century Studios alongside Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci on July 1, included the caption, "'The Devil Wears Prada 2'. Now in production."

The Devil Wears Prada 2: Returning Cast

The sequel reunites the original cast members who made the first film a cultural phenomenon. Meryl Streep returns as the formidable Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of the glossy fashion magazine Runway. Anne Hathaway reprises her role as Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs, the aspiring journalist who served as Priestly's assistant.

Emily Blunt returns to portray Emily, Priestly's sharp-tongued former assistant, while Stanley Tucci comes back to the franchise.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: New Cast Members

Acclaimed actor Kenneth Branagh joins the production as a significant new addition to the cast. According to reports, Branagh will portray Miranda Priestly's husband, adding a new dynamic to the character relationships established in the original film.

This casting choice brings additional star power to the sequel while potentially exploring previously unseen aspects of Priestly's personal life.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: Expected Plot

While complete plot details remain confidential, the sequel reportedly focuses on Miranda Priestly navigating her career amid the decline of the traditional publishing industry. The story positions Priestly in conflict with Emily Blunt's character, who has transformed from assistant to high-powered executive for a luxury group.

This central conflict revolves around advertising funds that Priestly desperately needs for her magazine's survival. The plot remains unclear regarding how Hathaway's Andy Sachs factors into the story, considering her character had quit Priestly's employment and joined a newspaper agency by the original film's conclusion.

David Frankel, who directed the original film, returns to helm the sequel alongside screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. Producer Karen Rosenfelt also joins the returning creative team, ensuring continuity with the first film's successful formula.

The original Devil Wears Prada, based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel, achieved critical and commercial success while cementing iconic cult status over the years. The film significantly impacted popular culture and continues to resonate with audiences.

The sequel's announcement comes with notable timing, arriving just days after Anna Wintour decided to step down from her position as Vogue editor-in-chief after 37 years. Wintour served as the inspiration for Priestly's character, as Weisberger briefly worked as her assistant.
