Rekha's acclaimed film Umrao Jaan is set to return to theatres in a meticulously restored 4K version. This revival offers audiences a chance to experience the cinematic masterpiece with enhanced visuals and sound.
Umrao Jaan Re-Release Date
Umrao Jaan will return to cinemas across India in a digitally restored 4K version starting June 27, 2025. The screenings will take place at select PVR INOX cinemas in multiple cities, as part of the exhibitor's Timeless Classics initiative.
This re-release offers audiences a rare chance to experience the timeless beauty of Muzaffar Ali’s period musical drama on the big screen once again.
The 4K restoration was undertaken by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI). Due to the fragile condition of the original negatives, the restoration utilised a 35mm release print preserved at NFAI. Director Muzaffar Ali supervised the colour grading to ensure the film's aesthetic integrity.
Coinciding with the re-release, Muzaffar Ali will unveil a limited-edition coffee table book. This book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of Umrao Jaan, featuring never-before-seen photographs, costume sketches, calligraphy, poetry, and personal anecdotes from the set. It serves as both a collector’s item and a tribute to the film’s artistic vision.
About Umrao Jaan
Umrao Jaan is a 1981 Indian period musical drama directed by Muzaffar Ali and based on Mirza Hadi Ruswa's 1899 Urdu novel. The film tells the story of a Lucknow courtesan and poetess, Umrao Jaan, portrayed by Rekha. Her performance earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. The film's soundtrack, composed by Khayyam with lyrics by Shahryar, includes timeless ghazals such as Dil Cheez Kya Hai and In Ankhon Ki Masti Ke.
Director Muzaffar Ali reflects on Rekha's portrayal, stating, "Rekha was magic and a miracle in Umrao Jaan." He emphasises her embodiment of the character, noting, "She became my Umrao, my artistic muse who brought poetry to life on screen." Ali credits her expressive eyes as central to the film's impact, saying, "The main reason why 'Umrao Jaan' is still etched in people's minds is Rekha's expressive eyes."
Rekha shares her deep connection with the role, stating, "Umrao Jaan is not just a film I acted in, she lives within me, breathes through me, even now." She expresses her joy at the film's return to the big screen, likening it to "watching an old love letter being opened by a new generation.”
