Have you ever watched a movie that does not feel like a fictional piece but instead an anecdote picked from the diary of reality? If you have, we applaud you, if you have not, ‘Masaan’ is the perfect movie for your first in this category. Each actor presents their character in the most authentic and rawest forms with the storyline being as simple as a white cotton cloth.
‘Tu kisi rail si guzarti hai, mai kisi pul sa thartharata hu…’ Varun Grover’s raw representation of love and Swanand Kirkire’s expressive voice adds a feel of the Varanasi ghats and sitting there sipping chai with your favourite one.
‘Masaan’ is an immensely underrated movie that did not win much praise in India but bagged brimming global recognition after it won the FIPRESCI Prize (Un Certain Regard) and Prix de l'Avenir (Un Certain Regard) at the Cannes Film Festival 2015. Let’s see what the hype is all about.
Unveils Police Brutality
Police brutality is a very common issue that openly occurs in our country. Taking advantage of the strong laws that protect them, many police officers misuse their power to torture common and helpless masses asking for bribes. ‘Masaan’ presents a minor yet impactful episode of the same as Devi (Richa Chadha) is haunted by a police officer for bribe for a crime she did not commit.
Taboos Around Relationships In Small Towns
Hate is spread under the open air while love has to be kept veiled. ‘Masaan’ highlights the persisting taboos around love and intimacy especially in rural areas and small towns. Devi and her lover booked a hotel room to spend intimate time but the police made it look like a crime despite laws that support the act.

Class Differences
Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a Shudra boy who burns bodies in a masaan, falling in love with Shalu, an upper-class girl highlights a bigger gain in society. Despite their pure intentions towards each other, it could have been a doomed love story had Shalu survived the bus crash.
Death, Loss, And Liberation
Death may be a five-letter word but it's heavier than one’s whole life combined could ever be. ‘Masaan’ happens to explain the loss of a loved one and the void it causes. However, it also gives an important lesson on how confronting the worst episodes of life and accepting the loss is the only way to move forward and find a place where your heart can truly be home.
