In traditional Indian society, fathers often carry the weight of family honour, financial responsibility, and social expectations. This pressure can sometimes manifest as strict control over their children's choices, creating conflicts that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable.
The beauty of these six films lies in how they demonstrate that change is possible at any stage of life. They teach us that understanding, empathy, and the willingness to admit mistakes can bridge even the widest gaps between generations.
Father's Day 2025 Movies
Kamal Mehra From Dil Dhadakne Do
In Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Anil Kapoor’s character Kamal Mehra is a wealthy patriarch who initially manipulates his family, even arranging his daughter’s marriage and ignoring his son’s dreams. But on a family cruise, Kamal faces his hypocrisy. After his son Kabir calls him out for infidelity, Kamal “realises his mistake”. He apologises and finally defends daughter Ayesha, agreeing to her divorce and encouraging Kabir to follow his love. By film’s end, Kamal Mehra shifts from a controlling boss to a supportive dad, showing that understanding and empathy can overcome ego.
Nandkishore Awasthi From Taare Zameen Par
In Taare Zameen Par (2007), Vipin Sharma plays Nandkishore Awasthi, a busy executive who believes his son Ishaan is lazy. He struggles to understand Ishaan’s dyslexia and sends him away to boarding school for poor grades. Only when art teacher Ram Nikumbh explains dyslexia does Nandkishore realise his mistake. Tearfully, he thanks the teacher and embraces Ishaan, finally acknowledging his son’s creativity.
Farookh Siddiqui From Secret Superstar
Secret Superstar (2017) is harsher: Raj Arjun’s Farookh Siddiqui is an abusive father who forbids his daughter Insiya from singing. He belittles her dreams and even harms his family. Farookh never really changes; it is Insiya’s mother who ultimately defies him. The film underscores that even when a father is villainous, his daughter’s talent and her mother’s support help her rise. Farookh’s absence (after Insiya and her mother leave) becomes a backdrop against which the girl’s strength shines, reminding us that children can still fly high in the sky when parents fail them.
Bhairav Singh From Udaan
In Udaan (2010), Ronit Roy’s Bhairav Singh is the ultimate cruel father. He forces his expelled son Rohan to work in a factory and beats him for wanting to write. Bhairav briefly apologises after a severe beating, but then resumes abuse (even burning Rohan’s diary). Rohan finally fights back and escapes with his younger brother, leaving Bhairav unchanged. There is no happy transformation, instead, Udaan shows how the absence of a father’s support can fuel a child’s courage.

Gurtej Singh Kahlon From Patiala House
Rishi Kapoor as a Sikh father scarred by past racism. When son Gattu (Akshay Kumar) dreams of playing cricket for England, Gurtej is furious and forbids it. But Gattu secretly makes the England team and wins people over. In the stadium, Gurtej tearfully watches on TV as his son plays and realises he was wrong. He apologises on-air and rushes to the stadium to see Gattu, asking, Is my son playing?. He and Gattu reconcile at the end, showing that fathers can choose their child’s dreams over old grudges.
Vikram Malhotra From 2 States
Finally, in 2 States (2014), Ronit Roy again plays a father: Vikram Malhotra, who is estranged and distant due to his alcoholism. Early on he is almost absent from his son Krish’s life. But at the climax, Vikram surprises everyone by visiting Krish’s future bride’s family in Chennai to ask for her hand. He sincerely apologises for past hurt. He then attends Krish’s wedding and makes peace with his wife Kavita, showing he has stepped up for his son. Vikram may not have been a hero at first, but by the end, he chooses to finally be there.
Across these six films, Bollywood shows fathers who start as antagonists, controlling, abusive or distant, learning to become supporters of their children.
