Baida is Sudhanshu Rai’s latest cinematic venture, featuring a talented ensemble cast and skillful direction by Puneet Sharma. Stepping into the theater with high hopes and curiosity, I was eager to experience the unique fusion of science fiction, thriller, and the supernatural that Baida promised. But does Baida truly live up to its claim of being a ‘first of its kind’? And should it be your next sci-fi must-watch? Read on to find out.
Blend Of Period Drama With Sci-Fi That Stands Out
The movie opens in an unexpected yet intriguing setting—a rural village in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh—an unusual backdrop for a science fiction film. The narrative kicks off with a gripping pre-independence sequence, where what appears to be a prisoner, or perhaps a freedom fighter, is being led to his execution in the 1940s. This shocking start swiftly transitions into a completely different scene, introducing Sudhanshu Rai as Ram Babu—an international spy weary of his life as an assassin. Seeking a quieter existence, he resigns and takes up a new job in rural Uttar Pradesh. However, his journey takes an eerie turn when, en route to his new workplace, he finds himself stranded in the middle of a field—only to encounter a series of chilling supernatural occurrences.
Dash Of Humour Keeps The Audience Alive
The first half of the movie is slow and keep you constantly wondering where the plot is headed—until Saurabh Raaj Jain makes his striking entry as ‘Pisach.’ Almost like a siren luring its prey, he draws Ram into his enigmatic world, marking the true beginning of the film’s supernatural and thriller elements. In a gripping twist, Ram is suddenly transported back in time, facing his own execution in a different realm. Just as we try to make sense of this eerie shift, he is abruptly pulled back to the present day.
This is where the film takes a lighter, unexpected turn with the arrival of Shobhit Sujay as ‘Golu.’ His impeccable comic timing and lively presence inject humor into the narrative, keeping the audience entertained. Manisha Rai serves as the film’s calming presence, offering a sense of hope amidst the chaos. Her character becomes a guiding force, helping Ram and Golu navigate their troubled situation. The dynamic between the serious and composed Ram and the hilariously terrified, bewildered Golu adds an enjoyable contrast that lasts till the very end.
As the story unfolds, Baida introduces a refreshing Interstellar-esque parallel universe concept—both thrilling and thought-provoking. Ram and Golu soon embark on an exhilarating adventure to save Ram’s life from the sinister mastermind, Pisach. Their partnership keeps the film engaging, while a short yet impactful cameo by Tarun Khanna as ‘The Doctor’ adds further depth to the storyline.
Supernatural, Sci-Fi, Thriller – Does Baida Deliver On All Fronts?
The short answer to whether Baida successfully blends supernatural, sci-fi, and thriller elements—without giving away too much—is a resounding yes. The film introduces a fascinating parallel universe concept, seamlessly intertwining black magic and science to create its supernatural essence. Meanwhile, Pisach’s sinister ambition to explore and manipulate life, death, and the afterlife adds a spine-chilling, suspenseful layer to the story.
While the movie starts off at a slower pace, it gradually gains momentum, delivering on its promise by the second half. Despite being a budget film with a limited cast, the actors, director, and overall production team have done a fairly gjob in bringing this unique vision to life.
Don’t miss the chance to watch Baida and experience the world of black magic, science, and humor in the theatres on March 21, 2025.
