Historical drama ‘Azaad’ starring newcomers Raveena Tandon’s daughter Rasha Thadani and Ajay Devgn’s nephew Aaman Devgan released on the big screens on January 17, 2025. The highly anticipated film also stars Ajay and Diana Penty in pivotal roles. While the item song ‘Uyi Amma’ became viral, it didn’t manage to attract the audience to the theatre leading to a bland opening collection. According to the Sacnilk report, the Abhishek Kapoor directorial managed to mint only Rs 1.85 crore on the 3rd day.

Despite all the word-of-mouth promotions and song becoming a sensation, Azaad experienced a dull opening of Rs 1.5 crore on Friday. On Saturday, the collection witnessed a further dip and made only Rs 1.3 crore. However, on Sunday, the theatres witnessed a slight jump in occupancy. The collection on the first weekend stands at Rs 4.65 crore, which is below average.

Set in the backdrop of pre-independence India, Azaad tells the story of Ajay’s character who is a daring horse rider evading ruthless British soldiers. When his beloved horse goes missing, he teams up with a young boy (Aaman) for a risky mission in the quest to find it. Rasha looks breathtaking in the royal, while Diana plays Ajay’s love interest.
Like audiences, critics have also been less than kind to the movie. Shubhra Gupta of SCREEN remarked, "Why are such films still being made in 2025? And is Abhishek Kapoor, who made the terrific ‘Kai Po Che’ and ‘Rock On,’ really the director of this mothballed exercise?"

On the other hand, some critics have been slightly in favour of the film. A Times Now review rated 3.5 stated, "Azaad is far away from the regular commercial cinema. It cuts through the wave of action thrillers quite neatly. Thoroughly engaging and entertaining in its treatment, this Abhishek Kapoor directorial has fewer dull moments."
