Beating popular picks of apparel, the saree is gaining more popularity around the world. Women wearing sarees are running marathons, skating, hula hooping and whatnot. Recently, a woman running a marathon in the UK has broken the internet after her video shared by Brut India has gone viral.

Madhusmita Jena Running A Marathon Wearing A Saree

Hailing from Odisha, India, Madhusmita Jena is a high-school teacher in Manchester and reportedly completed the run of 42.5km in four hours and 50 minutes wearing a Sambalpuri handloom saree.

Jena has been garnering applause around the globe. While many people are praising her, others are questioning if a saree can be a practical choice for running a marathon.

Friends of India Soc Intl UK Twitter account posted her video with the caption, “Madhusmita Jena, an Indian living in Manchester, UK, comfortably runs Manchester Marathon 2023 in a lovely Sambalpuri saree, while proudly showcasing her Indian heritage. She also presents an inviting perspective on the quintessential Indian attire.”

Former assistant secretary-general at the United Nations, Lakshmi M Puri, retweeted the post with a caption that read, “Saree Jahan Se Achi, Madhusmita reminds me of my Ayee playing tennis in saree 95 years ago or my days of walking to work in it through snow, sleet and wind channels in NYC & Geneva. Certain heroism in keeping faith with it for identity or grace or familiarity at all? Inspirational!”
