When Is An Ovarian Cyst Harmful?
The expert shared that there are 2 types of cysts that form during ovulation:
Follicular cysts - It happens when during the ovulation, instead of the egg release, the follicle stays intact and the cyst grows.
Luteal cysts - They form after ovulation. When the egg has broken free, the follicle closes again itself and a fluid builds inside it.
Commonly, these cysts are harmful and disappear within a few months without treatment.
The expert shared that it is not typical for ovarian cysts to affect fertility, larger or multiple cysts can have other side effects or symptoms. If the cysts don't go away in a few months or continue to grow or cause you pain then it is recommended to get them removed with a surgery.
She further shared that with a larger ovarian cyst, there are chances of a condition where the ovary twists, it it called ovarian torsion. In this condition if the surgery is not done promptly, it can lead to the loss of the ovary.
Treatment For Benign Cysts
For benign cysts, the expert shared that having hormonal birth control such as pills, patch, vaginal ring can help as they prevent ovulation and lower the chances of you getting more cysts.
Ovarian Cysts Affecting Fertility
The expert shared that not all ovarian cysts affect ferlity. If ovarian cysts are removed through surgery, they don't really affect fertility. It affects fertlity only when the doctor removes an ovary which is also rare and happens only when the cyst is large, cancerous or complex.
