As you bundle up to be brave in the face of the chilly weather, don't forget to shield your skin from the winter sun's hidden dangers. While it may not feel as scorching as the summer sun, the winter sun's UV rays can still cause damage, dryness, and even premature ageing. So, the question arises whether you should keep sunscreen in your winter skincare regime or not. Our expert, Akanksha Sharma, CEO & Co-Founder of CITTA, shared some insightful information regarding this dilemma. Read on to learn more.
Why Should You Apply Sunscreen In Winter?
Sharma explained, “Sunscreen is not just a summertime essential; instead, it’s a year-round necessity to prevent sunburns and protect skin from harmful UVA & UVB rays. Whether it’s sunny or cloudy, sunscreen is an essential part of a skincare regimen, even for kids, ensuring they stay safe and enjoy their time outdoors without compromising their long-term skin health.”
“The cold winter months might lack the blazing sun, but harmful UV rays don’t take a break. UVB rays, responsible for sunburn, may decrease in intensity, but UVA rays, known for penetrating deep into the skin and causing premature ageing, are constant year-round. Even cloudy skies don’t block UV radiation; up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds,” she added.
Should You Let Your Children Use Sunscreen In Winter?
Akanksha said, “Children’s skin, being about 20 times thinner, is significantly more sensitive and delicate than adult skin. This makes it more susceptible to the damaging effects of UV rays, such as sunburns and even long-term risks. Unlike adults, children may not naturally avoid prolonged sun exposure, heightening the need for extra care from an early age. Besides, outdoor activities, while essential for growth and play, inevitably mean sun exposure, making sun protection crucial from an early age.”

“To protect their sensitive skin effectively, the little ones aged 6 months and above, should wear sunscreen with SPF 70 and a PA++++ rating for maximum protection. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. It is important to select products specifically and consciously crafted for children, featuring natural and non-toxic ingredients that are gentle on delicate skin,” she continued.
“Incorporating sunscreen into a child’s daily routine establishes good habits early, reducing their risk of developing skin-related issues later in life. UV damage is cumulative, so early prevention is key to maintaining healthy skin. This inspired CITTA, a premium baby bath & skincare brand based in Pune, to launch its Protecting Sunscreen, enriched with humus extract, for babies six months and older. Broad-spectrum SPF 70 PA++++ protection with humus extract, the Protecting Sunscreen restores the microbiome and boosts skin immunity. Infused with aloe vera, almond butter, and Himalayan apricot oil, it not only protects but also moisturizes. Apply the sunscreen to your little one’s skin 15-30 minutes before heading outdoors, and make sure to reapply every two to three hours,” concluded Sharma.
