5 Ways To Grow Your Nails Faster

Slower growing nails can be a sign of illness or nutritional deficiency.

Keratin is a hard protein, which makes up your fingernails. Fingernails are associated with the overall health of your body. Healthy nails are smooth and hard, free of discolouration and any dents.

If you’re experiencing short and brittle nails, or have broken your nail which took you longer than normal to grow, here are five home remedies and techniques that can help grow your nails faster:

Take Biotin Supplements

nail biotins

Biotin is an important type of Vitamin B which allows the body to convert food into energy. Several studies suggest that taking a biotin supplement daily can strengthen and boost nail growth.

It is recommended to take a dose of 2.5 milligrams of biotin daily which will promote nail growth in just a few weeks. Biotin can also be found in eggs, nut and nut butters, whole grains, cauliflower, bananas, mushrooms, soybean, and sardines.

Use nail hardeners

Softs nails are more prone to breaking which in turn increases the need for nail regrowth. Experts normally recommend nail hardeners to prevent nails from breaking.

These substances are painted onto nails like a polish and can be later removed with a nail polish remover. However, prolonged use can be harmful to nail strength, so they should be used sparingly.

Avoid excessive use of glue-on nails and toxic polishes

Studies have found that regular use of glue-on artificial nails can weaken the real nails and cause nail brittleness, making them prone to breakage. It is much better to paint your nails that have little to no toxic chemicals such as toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate.

Water-based formulas that indicate they are toxin-free are a great alternative.

Nail grooming on a regular basis can encourage growth and reduce breaking of nails. Some ways to maintain your nails are:

Nails should be dry and clean to keep bacteria from growing under them.

  • Moisturising your hands and nails with cream, and making sure to rub it at the base of your cuticles is important.
  • Avoid biting your nails or cutting your nails too short
  • Use sharp manicure clippers or scissors to trim your nails in a straight line, and then rounden the tips to make a soft curve.

Natural juice and oil remedies

There are some fruit and vegetable concoctions that can be directly applied on the nails:

  • Lemons are rich in Vitamin C, which is great for nail growth. Rub a slice of lemon on your fingers for around five minutes and wash it thoroughly with water.
  • Coconut oil is full of Vitamin E and antioxidants, and gives moisture to the nail. It is easily permeable, which absorbs it fully into the nails. Having antioxidants, it also prevents fungal and bacterial infection. Warm up some extra virgin coconut oil and massage it in circular motions to improve blood circulation.
  • Orange juice has Vitamin C and folic acid which aids in collagen production, which is an important agent that adds to the vitality of nails. Take a bowl of orange juice and soak your nails in it for 10 minutes, and rinse it with water.
  • Olive oil reaches the inner layer of your nails and cures it of all the dryness. It helps with damaged and brittle nails. Warm up some virgin olive oil and gently massage your nails and cuticles for sometime before covering it with gloves, and letting it rest overnight.
