Masturbation is known to bring happiness, satisfaction, and intense orgasms. However, some people on the internet now claim that it also causes acne. There are numerous misconceptions surrounding masturbation, and the lack of extensive research on its long-term effects may contribute to these misunderstandings. To gain expert insights, we reached out to Dr Rishabh Raj Sharma, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at NIIMS Medical College & Hospital, and Dr Sagar Mundada, Consultant Psychiatrist and Sexologist at Mumbai Healthspring, who shared their perspectives on the matter.

Does Masturbation Cause Acne?

Some people link masturbation or sexual activity to acne, believing that hormonal fluctuations during these activities could lead to breakouts. While hormones do influence the skin, especially androgens, oestrogens, and progesterone, which regulate sebum (oil) production, there is no scientific evidence proving that masturbation directly causes acne.

According to Dr Rishabh Raj Sharma, hormonal changes do affect skin health, but masturbation-induced hormone spikes, such as those in dopamine, prolactin, and testosterone are too short-lived to have any lasting impact. Many assume that a testosterone surge from masturbation triggers acne, but this spike is brief and insignificant in affecting sebum levels.

Dr Sagar Mundada agrees, stating that there are many misconceptions surrounding masturbation, with one of the most common being that it causes acne. He clarifies that while excessive or compulsive masturbation can lead to certain issues, acne is not one of them.

"There is no scientific evidence linking masturbation to acne," Dr Mundada emphasises. He further adds that masturbation is completely safe when done in a healthy and balanced manner.

Similarly, concerns that masturbation causes dry skin, premature ageing, or dark circles are mostly unfounded. These skin issues are more commonly linked to dehydration, poor skincare habits, lack of sleep, and genetics rather than masturbation.

Dr Sharma said, “Factors like a healthy diet, proper hydration, stress management, and skincare routines play a far greater role in maintaining clear, healthy skin than any temporary hormonal changes due to masturbation. Instead of worrying about a masturbation-acne connection, it's better to focus on overall wellness and skincare.”

Common Misconceptions About Masturbation And Skin Health

Masturbation is often linked to acne and skin issues, but this belief stems more from cultural myths than scientific facts. One of the most widespread misconceptions is that masturbation causes acne. However, Dr. Rishabh Raj Sharma clarifies that acne primarily results from factors like hormonal fluctuations, excess sebum production, and bacterial activity, not masturbation.

Another myth suggests that masturbation leads to premature ageing, causing fine lines and wrinkles. Dr Sharma said, “Skin ageing is influenced by genetics, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices, rather than sexual habits. Some also believe that frequent masturbation can dull the skin or cause dryness due to nutrient loss.” However, the body naturally replenishes any lost nutrients, and skin hydration depends more on diet and skincare routines than sexual activity.

Additionally, concerns about masturbation leading to dark circles or balding are also unfounded. These issues typically arise from stress, lack of sleep, and genetic predisposition, rather than any link to sexual habits. Dr Sharma emphasises that there is no solid scientific evidence connecting masturbation to skin problems. Instead, healthy skin depends on proper hydration, nutrition, skincare, and overall well-being. Separating fact from fiction is essential for maintaining a balanced approach to skincare.

Are There Any Negative Health Effects Of Masturbation?

As for whether masturbation is safe, Dr Mundada emphasises that it is completely safe when practised healthily. However, there are certain unhealthy habits associated with masturbation that can lead to issues over time.

One major concern is the overreliance on pornography. Dr Mundada said, “Excessive porn consumption while masturbating can condition the brain in a way that affects real-life intimacy. This can lead to problems such as erectile dysfunction or difficulty achieving arousal with a partner.”

Another issue arises when people masturbate hurriedly due to time or space constraints. Rushing the process repeatedly can train the brain to expect quick gratification, which may contribute to premature ejaculation or reduced libido during actual intercourse.

Additionally, engaging in physically demanding or aggressive masturbation can potentially cause nerve damage or harm small blood vessels. Dr Sagar advises, “Masturbation should be done in a private and relaxed environment, allowing oneself to slowly build up stimulation rather than rushing the experience.”

Lastly, overdoing it can lead to fatigue and exhaustion, impacting overall well-being. Dr Sagar stresses that masturbation should be seen as a form of self-care and self-love, practised mindfully and in moderation, to avoid addiction and negative consequences.

On the other hand, most cases of acne are mild and can be managed with proper skincare and lifestyle habits without requiring medical intervention. However, in more severe cases, a doctor may recommend antibiotics or stronger medications to help control breakouts and prevent scarring.
