Apple Cider Vinegar For Dandruff
One of the most common conditions of the scalp is dandruff, which leads to flakiness as well as itchiness. A lot of over-the-counter shampoos are available that are anti-dandruff in nature, but many people want to get relief from it in a natural way. Here comes a strong role of ACV, apple cider vinegar, which is considered to be a potent ingredient for fighting dandruff.
Why Apple Cider Vinegar?
Synthesised from fermented apple juice, apple cider vinegar or ACV contains acetic acid and possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties. Because of these characteristics, ACV is a potent remedy for dandruff, especially if the cause of dandruff is a fungal infection with Malassezia.
Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar
1. Maintaining optimal scalp pH - ACV helps balance the scalp’s natural pH, making it less hospitable for fungus to thrive.
2.Antimicrobial properties - The acetic acid in ACV may help control fungal overgrowth and kill bacteria that can worsen dandruff or scalp acne.
3.Resolving scalp concerns - Its anti-inflammatory properties may reduce itchiness, while its ability to remove product buildup and excess oil helps in flake control.
4.Better blood circulation - When massaged into the scalp, ACV may help boost circulation, supporting healthier hair follicles.
How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar for Dandruff?
"Dilution is key. Never apply ACV directly to the scalp in its raw form as it’s too strong and may cause irritation or burning. The best solution is mixing one part of ACV with 2 parts of water and applying it on your scalp post shampooing. After letting it sit for 5-10 minutes, rinse the ACV solution thoroughly with water and observe significant lowering of dandruff after a month. Recommended application is once or twice a week. For making this solution more potent by possessing antifungal properties, add a few drops of tea tree oil and individuals with sensitive scalp can add aloe vera gel too," said the expert.
Caution:
- Avoid using ACV on broken or irritated skin.
- Always do a patch test before full application.
- People with eczema, psoriasis, or extremely dry scalp should consult a dermatologist first.
"Apple cider vinegar isn’t a miracle cure, but it can prove to be helpful for dealing with mild to moderate cases of dandruff. If your dandruff is severe or persistent, use medicated shampoos or even a recommended medical treatment. Natural, affordable, and easy to use, ACV is worth trying but always with caution and consistency," concluded DrMahajan.
