The devotees of the Hindu religion consider the occasion of Vijaya Ekadashi 2025 extremely sacred and significant. Celebrated on the 11th lunar day of the bright half of the Magha month, as per the Hindu calendar, Vijaya Ekadashi is a time for spiritual rejuvenation, seeking divine blessings, and cleansing past karma. Read this article to know the date, timings, significance, and other details for Vijaya Ekadashi 2025 from our expert, Astrologer Dr Virender Sahni, Vedic, KP, Naadi, Numerologist, and Tarot Card Reader.

Astrologer Sahni said, “Vijaya Ekadashi is considered one of the most powerful and auspicious Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar. Falling just before Mahashivratri, it holds immense significance in terms of spiritual cleansing, success, and victory over obstacles. As per scriptures, observing this Ekadashi helps individuals overcome hurdles in life, whether personal, financial, or professional. This Ekadashi is especially important for those facing career setbacks, legal troubles, or long-standing problems, as it is believed to bring divine assistance in overcoming challenges.”

What to Do on Vijaya Ekadashi?

Dr Sahni shared, “The most important aspect of Vijaya Ekadashi is fasting (Vrat). It is not just about avoiding food but also about purifying the mind and body. Ideally, devotees should consume only fruits, milk, and water, but for those who can manage a Nirjala (waterless) fast, it is even more rewarding. The idea is to control your senses and focus on spiritual awakening rather than materialistic cravings.”

What to Do on Vijaya Ekadashi

“One should wake up early and take a bath, preferably with Ganga Jal, and wear clean, light-coloured clothes. After that, chanting ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’ or the ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’ mantra is highly beneficial. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day, and offering Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, and Satvik Bhog is considered auspicious. Many devotees also read the Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha, which narrates the importance of this day in helping Lord Ram conquer Lanka,” he added.

The astrologer also said, “Another important practice is charity (Daan). As per scriptures, donating food, clothes, or money to the needy on Vijaya Ekadashi brings immense Punya (merit). Annadan (food donation) is highly recommended, as feeding the poor on this day is said to cleanse past karmas.”

“Since Vijaya Ekadashi is all about overcoming obstacles, people engaged in legal matters or professional struggles can pray for resolution and success. Lighting a ghee diya near a Tulsi plant in the evening is believed to remove negativity and bring prosperity,” he continued.

Astrologer Virender said, “The most common mistake people make is not following the Vrat with discipline. If you are observing this fast, you should avoid consuming rice, grains, pulses, or onion-garlic, as these are considered Tamasic foods that can disturb the energy flow. Even those who are not fasting should refrain from consuming these foods, as their vibrations interfere with the sanctity of the day.”

What Not to Do on Vijaya Ekadashi

“One should avoid anger, gossip, and unnecessary arguments on this day. Ekadashi is about self-discipline, and engaging in conflicts negates the positive effects of fasting. Similarly, speaking ill of others, lying, or hurting someone intentionally should be completely avoided,” he explained.

You are also advised not to sleep during the day. Vijaya Ekadashi is meant for meditation and self-reflection, so spending excessive time in sleep reduces its benefits. Instead, try to engage in spiritual activities, reading scriptures, or simply being mindful. Physical intimacy should also be avoided on this day, as it lowers the spiritual energy one accumulates through fasting and prayer.

“Lastly, alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and smoking should be strictly prohibited. The whole essence of Ekadashi is to cleanse oneself of impurities, both physical and mental, so indulging in such habits reduces the positive effects of the Vrat,” concluded Dr Sahni.
