Understanding Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Smartism
Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, and Smartism are the four denominations of the Hindu religion. The followers of Vaishnavism aka Vishnuism believe Lord Vishnu to be the supreme deity. The followers of Shaivism are devoted to Lord Shiva who is known as a powerful and supreme deity. The followers of Shaktism believe Goddess Durga to be the supreme power in the universe. And last but not least, the followers of Smartism worship the five Hindu deities: Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti, Ganesha, and Surya.
How To Choose The Right Path?
Amit Pradhan said, “The question of which path to follow, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Shaktism, or Smartism, can be complex. It is crucial to understand that Shaktism is considered a subset of Shaivism, emphasising the complementary nature of Shiva and Shakti. Vedic astrologers often suggest seeking Shiva for knowledge and Vishnu for liberation, but true spiritual enlightenment requires both wisdom and salvation.”
A quote in Ramayana says, “Shiv Drohee Mam Daas Kahaave, So Nar Sapanehu Mohan Na Paava,” which loosely translates to "One who is a traitor to Shiva and tries to be my devotee will not attain me even in dreams."

“This emphasises the deep connection and mutual respect between Shiva and Vishnu. The Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various Puranas reveal that Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are deeply interconnected and revered by each other,” added Pradhan.
Amit explained that in modern times, the competition to prove one sect superior to another has led to unnecessary conflicts. “Instead of engaging in debates over which deity or tradition is greater, it is more important for individuals to follow their chosen path with devotion and respect for others. By embracing our own practices with sincerity and honouring the diversity of spiritual paths, we can foster a harmonious and enriched spiritual community,” he elaborated.
