Makar Sankranti is observed during the Krishna Paksha of Paush month and this year, we will celebrate it on January 15. On this day, the Sun leaves the Sagittarius zodiac sign and enters Capricorn and therefore, there is great importance of worshipping the Sun God on this day.

Significance Of Eating Khichdi On Makar Sankranti

The expert shared that it is mentioned in the scriptures that Khichdi is believed to be the Prasad of Navagraha and eating it can help you remove all the planetary defects.

The tradition of making Khichdi on Makar Sankranti includes preparing the dish with sesame seeds, jaggery, curd, and Chuda (Poha) and it has been followed by the devotees for a long time.

It is also advisable to add ingredients like rice, pulses, turmeric, green vegetables etc., to it as each of these ingredients is associated with different planets. Meanwhile, Khichdi is believed to be related to the Moon and Venus. With turmeric’s association with Jupiter and ghee’s relation to the Sun as per astrology, the dish prepared on Makar Sankranti with proper instructions is considered to be an inclusive remedy to attract peace. Story Behind The Tradition Of Eating Khichdi

According to the legend, the tradition of eating Khichdi started from the time when Lord Shiva incarnated as Baba Gorakhnath. The story starts with Nath Yogi’s war with Khilji and his army when he neither cooked nor ate food. Because of being hungry for days, his physical body started to loose its strength and to recover power and strength, he was asked by Baba Gorakhnath to prepare a dish by mixing pulses, rice and vegetables, named Khichdi (Simple Recipe Of Khichdi) by the Lord.

Within little to no time, Yogi regained his strength after eating it. Since that day, there has been a tradition of offering Khichdi to Baba Gorakhnath.
