As the festive season approaches, it's essential to be vigilant about your child's health. While the season brings joy, it also ushers in a rise in seasonal illnesses, including the H3N2 flu which is rising in Delhi NCR. H3N2 flu is a highly contagious type of Influenza A virus that causes severe acute respiratory infections, leading to symptoms like fever, persistent cough, and fatigue. Understanding the red flags indicating increased vulnerability can help in early intervention and better care. We spoke to Dr Shivangi Bora, Consultant Paediatrician at BabyMD, to shed light on these warning signs and how to protect your child:

5 Red Flags That Suggest Your Child May Be More Vulnerable To H3N2 Flu

1. Babies Under Six Months

Dr Shivangi Bora says, “Infants younger than six months are at higher risk of complications from flu viruses, since they have an immature immune system, which makes it harder for their bodies to effectively fight infections.”

2. Lack of Breastfeeding In Newborn Babies

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “Breast milk helps protect infants from many respiratory diseases, including influenza (flu). Mothers with suspected or confirmed flu should take all possible precautions to avoid spreading the virus to their infants while continuing to provide them with breast milk.”

Breastfeeding In Newborns

Dr Shivangi Bora explains, “Breast milk contains a host of antibodies that help protect babies from infections. Newborns who have not been breastfed may have a lower level of immune protection against flu viruses, especially during the seasonal flu outbreaks.”

3. Children Under Five Years

Young children under five are more susceptible to infections because of immature immunity and are at higher risk of exposure. Their immune systems are still developing, making them more susceptible to infections.

5. Missed Flu Vaccine

Vaccination is a crucial preventive measure against the flu. Unvaccinated children are at a significantly higher risk of contracting the virus and experiencing severe symptoms. Dr Shivangi Bora emphasises the importance of timely flu vaccinations to safeguard your child's health.

Flu Vaccine

She says, “The flu vaccination provides important protection against circulating strains every year. Children who miss their annual flu shot are more susceptible to catching this influenza and experiencing severe symptoms.”

Recognising these red flags early can make a significant difference in managing your child's health during the flu season.
