Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, Director, The Yoga Institute, says that a change in the season brings along with it a change in our health. Our body needs to prepare itself to adjust to the changing seasons, this is known as Rutucharya. The transitory phase from one season to another can be of 15 days. It is in these 15 days that we must take the utmost care of our health. The low temperature and humidity can cause an imbalance in the energy that can further affect our overall health and well-being.

A few dietary changes are required to keep the digestive system functioning well. Dr. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra suggests a few points that you must keep in mind are:

You are what you eat. It is essential to eat well in the winters to protect your body from the inside. The digestive system is already weak in winters, so it is important to have a healthy diet. Ensure that you have a well-balanced meal that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. Try to incorporate seasonal vegetables in your diet.

cashew almonds

Your body needs lubrication from the inside to protect you from the winter dryness on the outside. Munch on all kinds of nuts to have a fit winter, like almonds, cashews, groundnuts, etc.

Heat up the body from the inside by eating warm food items like spices that include cinnamon, dry ginger, garlic. This will help to keep the Agni active in the body.

coconut ghee

Oils help to keep the body warm from inside. Increase the intake of Coconut Oil and Ghee in your diet.

Your body requires fibers during winters. Include green leafy vegetables and fibrous fruits in your diet, like oranges. Also, use a lot of garlic chives and onion leaves.

Try to listen to your body. You don’t need to constantly keep eating just to stay warm from the inside. You must eat only when you are hungry and not when the clock says so. Small quantities of food that can fill you as much as you need, is more than enough.

Since the digestive system is weak in the winters, avoid eating raw food items. Well-cooked food items must be preferred to not put any undue pressure on the digestive system.

Drink a lot of water to flush out all the toxins from the body. Warm water does wonders for the body, as it not only helps to keep the body warm but also removes all the residual build-ups from the inside so that you don’t fall sick.

Your food can talk a lot about your internal health. This winter, have a healthy and rich diet to keep your body fit from the inside.
