The days are only getting hotter, scorching summer ahead! That time of the year again when we are all concerned about our water intake throughout the day. To stay hydrated all day long, we keep our water bottles handy and keep sipping on juices, flavoured drinks regularly. Boosting our water intake helps maintain our energy and endure the heat. But did you know that just adding a pinch of salt can have a significant impact on our hydration efforts?
A lot of people have been adding salt to their water for hydration lately. Heard of this new health trend and wondering if it offers any benefits? We spoke to Nehal Satish Patel, Sports Nutritionist - Fast&Up to understand how this health hack works.
“When we sweat, we lose both water and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Electrolytes are important for regulating fluid balance in our bodies and keeping our muscles functioning properly. So, when we are engaging in prolonged physical activity or sweating excessively, we need to replenish both our water and electrolyte stores. That's where adding salt to our hydration routine comes in,” the nutritionist said.
The expert added that drinking electrolyte-rich beverages like electrolyte drinks and coconut water are also beneficial during summer. However, she suggested checking the labels and choosing beverages that genuinely supply you with all five essential electrolytes or at least three to four electrolytes.
Adding a pinch of salt to our water or sports drink can help replace the sodium lost through sweat and aid in hydration.
