How Drinking More Water Can Help Relieve Migraines, According To Doctor

Migraines are a debilitating condition affecting millions worldwide, characterised by intense, throbbing headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. According to the American Migraine Foundation about one-third of people with migraine say lack of fluid intake or being dehydrated can set off an attack. Dr Aditya Gupta, Director of Neurosurgery and Cyberknife, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram shared how drinking more water can help relieve migraine.

The Importance Of Hydration

Dr Aditya said, “The human body is composed of approximately 60% water, which plays a critical role in nearly every bodily function, from temperature regulation to waste elimination.” “Dehydration can lead to a host of health problems, including headaches and migraines. When the body lacks sufficient water, it can trigger headaches as a warning signal to prompt you to drink more fluids,” he added.

Scientific Evidence

Several studies have highlighted the link between hydration and migraine relief. A study published in the European Journal of Neurology found that participants who increased their water intake experienced significant reductions in the intensity and duration of their migraine attacks. Another study in the journal Headache reported that adequate hydration could reduce the frequency of migraines in chronic sufferers.

Mechanism Of Action

Dr Gupta mentioned that the exact mechanism by which water alleviates migraines (difference between migraine and headache) is not entirely understood, but several theories exist. One theory suggests that dehydration leads to a reduction in blood volume, causing blood vessels to constrict and reduce the oxygen supply to the brain, which may trigger a migraine. Drinking more water helps maintain optimal blood volume and pressure, ensuring adequate oxygen delivery to the brain.

He mentioned another hypothesis which says dehydration affects the balance of electrolytes in the body, such as sodium and potassium, which are essential for nerve function. Imbalances in these electrolytes can lead to neurological symptoms, including migraines. By staying hydrated, you help maintain this delicate balance, potentially preventing migraine episodes.

Practical Tips For Staying Hydrated

Here are a few tips mentioned by the doctor to remain hydrated:

Drink Regularly

Dr Gupta recommends aiming to drink water throughout the day, not just when you feel thirsty. He advises carrying a reusable water bottle with you to remind yourself to hydrate.

Monitor Your Intake

He suggests tracking your daily water consumption to ensure you meet the recommended intake. While it is recommended to drink at least eight 8 glasses of water per day, individual needs may vary.

Eat Water-Rich Foods

According to Dr Gupta, you should consume fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges to ensure hydration.

Aditya said to reduce consumption of drinks that can lead to dehydration, such as coffee, alcohol, and sugary sodas.
